What is the pass mark for the Life in the UK Test?

Eighteen out of twenty-four. That is 75%, and it means six wrong answers is the most you can afford.

The short answer

You need 18 correct answers out of 24 to pass the Life in the UK Test — 75%. Six wrong answers and you still pass. Seven and you do not.

Why 18 is stricter than it sounds

Seventy-five per cent is a high bar for a factual recall test with four options per question. Guessing at random gives you roughly six correct out of 24, nowhere near a pass. In practice you need genuine knowledge of most of the material, and the six-question margin disappears quickly if you have skipped a whole topic.

The most common failure pattern is not broad weakness — it is one neglected area. Someone who has learned the history but never looked at devolution loses four or five marks in a block and fails on a paper they otherwise knew.

What to aim for in practice

Practice scoreWhat it means
21–24Comfortable. Book the test.
18–20A pass, but with no margin. Fix your weakest topic first.
14–17Close. Usually one or two topics are missing entirely.
Below 14Read the chapter summaries before sitting more papers.

Aim for 21 or better on papers you have not seen before, twice in a row. That gives you a real margin for nerves on the day.

Is the pass mark ever adjusted?

No. It is a fixed threshold, not a curve — your result does not depend on how anyone else did. Every question counts the same, so there is no advantage in prioritising one topic over another beyond fixing your own gaps.

Partial credit on "choose two" questions

There is none. If a question asks for two answers, you need both to score the mark. Read those questions twice.

Do you find out your score?

You are told whether you passed at the test centre, usually within minutes of finishing. You are not given a detailed breakdown of which questions you got wrong, which is another reason to identify your weak topics in practice rather than after the fact.
