Home/ILR/ILR vs citizenship test

ILR · Common confusion

Is the ILR test different from the citizenship test?

No. They are the same test. One sitting, one certificate, two applications it can support.

Where the confusion comes from

People talk about "the ILR test" and "the citizenship test" as though they were two exams, because they are mentioned in two different application processes years apart. They are not. Both refer to the Life in the UK Test: 24 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes, 18 correct to pass, taken on screen at an approved centre. There is no settlement edition and no citizenship edition. Same question bank, same format, same pass mark.

You sit it once

This is the practical point that saves people money. A Life in the UK Test pass does not expire. If you pass it for your ILR application and apply for British citizenship three years later, you do not sit it again — you give the same reference number. Anyone telling you to retake it for citizenship is mistaken.

What actually differs between the two applications

ILR (settlement)British citizenship
Life in the UK TestRequired (most routes)Required
English requirementUsually B1 speaking and listeningUsually B1 speaking and listening
What you getPermission to stay indefinitelyBritish nationality and a passport
Residence neededA qualifying period on your routeNormally a further period after ILR
CeremonyNoneYes — oath or affirmation and a pledge
Can it be lostYes, by long absence from the UKNo, once granted

So the test is the constant. What changes around it is the residence you must show, the fee, and what you hold at the end.

Immigration rules, fees and waiting periods are set by the Home Office and change without notice. Always confirm the current requirements for your own visa route on GOV.UK before you book or apply. This page is general information, not immigration advice.

One thing worth doing at ILR stage

Keep the pass notification. People lose it in the years between the two applications, and while the pass is recorded, having your reference number to hand makes the citizenship form considerably easier. Photograph it and store it with your immigration documents.

Does the test get harder for citizenship?

No. Same bank, same difficulty. If you found it hard for ILR, that is worth remembering only in the sense that the material — particularly the history and government chapters — reappears in the citizenship ceremony's context, not in another exam.
