# Life in the UK Test study guide

The official study material runs to five chapters and a few hundred pages. These are short summaries of each — the facts that actually get tested, with the dates and numbers pulled out, and two questions at the end of every chapter.

- [1. The values and principles of the UK](https://uktestmate.co.uk/handbook/values-and-principles/) — The shortest chapter and the easiest marks in the test.
- [2. What is the UK?](https://uktestmate.co.uk/handbook/what-is-the-uk/) — A single page of definitions that a surprising number of candidates get wrong.
- [3. A long and illustrious history](https://uktestmate.co.uk/handbook/a-long-and-illustrious-history/) — The longest chapter and the biggest share of the test.
- [4. A modern, thriving society](https://uktestmate.co.uk/handbook/a-modern-thriving-society/) — The culture chapter: festivals, sport, writers, buildings.
- [5. The UK government, the law and your role](https://uktestmate.co.uk/handbook/uk-government-and-the-law/) — The second biggest source of test questions.

## A revision order that works

1. Sit [practice exam 1](https://uktestmate.co.uk/practice-exams/exam-1/) cold. Do not revise first — you need an honest baseline.
2. Read chapter 1 and chapter 2. They are short and they are easy marks.
3. Spend most of your time on chapter 3 (history) and chapter 5 (government). Between them they supply the bulk of the questions.
4. Skim chapter 4 by category — calendar, sport, arts, buildings — rather than reading it through.
5. Re-sit exam 1, then work through fresh papers until you are scoring 21 or better consistently.

## What these summaries are not

They are a revision aid, not a replacement for the official material, and they do not reproduce it. Everything here is written in-house from the publicly published knowledge areas for new residents, with GOV.UK and UK Parliament as reference points. Anything the government can change — seat counts, age limits, thresholds — is worth re-checking against GOV.UK before you sit the real test.
