# What happens if you fail the Life in the UK Test?

You can take it again. There is a waiting period, the fee is payable each time, and there is no limit on attempts.

## The short answer

Failing is not final. You may book and sit the test again, but you have to wait a short period — currently seven days — before your next attempt, and you pay the test fee each time you sit it. There is no cap on the number of attempts.

Fees and waiting periods are set by the Home Office and can change, so check the current figures on GOV.UK before you rebook rather than relying on any third-party site, including this one.

## What you are told about your result

You find out whether you passed at the test centre, usually within minutes. You are not given a per-question breakdown, so you will not be told which topics let you down. That is the single most useful thing to know in advance: you have to diagnose your gaps in practice, because the real test will not do it for you.

## What to do differently on the second attempt

1. **Stop reading and start testing.** If your first attempt followed weeks of reading the material, the problem is retrieval, not exposure. Sit timed papers instead.
2. **Find the block you lost.** Most failures come from one neglected topic rather than general weakness. Sit three fresh papers and look at which topic your wrong answers cluster in.
3. **Drill the confusable pairs.** The similar dates and the similar numbers. Write them out side by side rather than learning them separately.
4. **Re-sit the same paper after revising.** It is the only way to confirm the revision worked.
5. **Book when you are scoring 21+ twice** on papers you have not seen, not when you first scrape 18.

## Does a fail affect your application?

A failed attempt does not count against your settlement or citizenship application in itself — you simply have not yet met the knowledge requirement. What matters for the application is holding a pass when you apply, along with the English language requirement. If your visa or application has a deadline, though, the seven-day wait and booking availability are worth building into your timing.

## Where to start again

Read the [five chapter summaries](https://uktestmate.co.uk/handbook/) once — they are short — then work through the [17 papers](https://uktestmate.co.uk/practice-exams/) in order, reading every explanation. The papers are fixed, so you can measure improvement rather than guess at it.
